Maximizing Public Safety in Calgary

The Calgary Police Service works to maximize public safety in Calgary through frontline policing and investigative resources, along with the necessary organizational support to make that happen.

Policing in Calgary is based on a comprehensive community policing strategy that focuses on education, prevention, intervention and enforcement. Being fiscally responsible, we are using our resources as effectively and efficiently as possible.

Frontline Policing

Response to 911 and non-emergency calls from district offices and community stations located in different areas of the city.
Enhancement of traffic safety by enforcing laws and educating the public through a number of prevention and safety initiatives.
Provision of educational programs focused on crime prevention and early intervention of at-risk individuals.
Work with a number of external partners to develop programs and response strategies to the issues of homelessness, drug addiction and mental illness.
Co-ordination with other agencies for joint-force operations including the RCMP, Alberta Sheriffs, CBSA and other law enforcement organizations.
Operation of the Real Time Operations Centre (RTOC) that provides real-time command, analytical and investigative support to front-line officers. The RTOC can co-ordinate and reallocate police resources as necessary.
Management of response to emergencies and major events.
Processing and administration of arrests.

Investigative Resources

Operational and investigative support to front-line officers through a number of specialty areas.
Focus on organized crime activities including fraud, identity theft, online crime, drugs, auto theft, commercial crime and gang activity.
Investigation of major crimes such as homicide, robbery, child abuse, sex crimes and home invasions.
Crime scene investigation, forensic services.
Analyses of crime trends and provision of other statistical and research services.

Organizational Support

Management of the police fleet and all CPS buildings.
Counseling support for all members of the Service.
Investigation of complaints against police officers and other employees.
Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy requests.
Internal audits.
Internal and external communication support services, including media and public relations.
Management of human resources, training and career development, including health and wellness services for Calgary Police Service employees.
Strategic planning and policy development.
Provision of information and technology support to all areas of the Service.
Financial support for the entire Service.
