Multi Agency School Support Teams (MASST)
Multi Agency School Support Teams (MASST)
The MASST program is an early intervention initiative that supports children and youth between the ages of five and 15 who are exhibiting behavior which puts them at risk for criminal involvement or are at increased risk for victimization.
Each MASST team consists of a police officer and a registered social worker working closely with the City of Calgary school boards. While the focus is on children, MASST engages parents and siblings, schools and community agencies.
MASST will address such risk factors as:
- Risky or dangerous behaviour at school or in the community that could result in criminal charges.
- Pattern of victimization at school or in the community.
- Alcohol and drug use.
- Seeking recognition and belonging from negative influences.
- Limited parental supervision.
- Parental or sibling criminal involvement.
- Limited attachment to the community.
Outcomes include: Increased collaboration among police, schools and social agencies to prevent youth crime, reduction in criminal involvement and/or victimization for participating children and youth, increased awareness among participants and families of the consequences of criminal behaviour, increased awareness and access to existing social support services for participating families.
Referrals to MASST come through existing CBE and CCSD area processes or CPS District front-line officers.
Parents are encouraged to speak with their school and schools are encouraged to speak with their Area specialists.
