Federal assault-style firearms program

The federal government has introduced the Assault‑Style Firearms Compensation Program, which requires owners of newly prohibited firearms to follow specific federal rules.

Individual owners of assault-style firearms who want to participate in the Assault-Style Firearms Compensation Program have to declare their interest in turning in their firearms and receive compensation from the federal government by March 31, 2026. Additionally, the period in which to stop possessing these firearms ends on Oct. 30, 2026 (known as the Amnesty Period).

The Assault-Style Firearms Compensation Program is the program that the Government of Alberta has declined to participate in. Despite this, the law is the law. After Oct. 30, 2026, if you possess any of the weapons that are prohibited pursuant to the Criminal Code of Canada, you will be contravening the law. While we are not participating in the program, we will continue to accept voluntary, non‑compensated surrenders of unwanted firearms and ammunition.
