ReDirect

Ideological and/or hate-motivated conflict involving youth is a serious issue that can arise for a variety of reasons, including differences in race, ethnicity, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, or differences in opinions and beliefs. These conflicts can have a detrimental impact on the mental and emotional well-being of the youth involved and can even lead to physical harm or violence.

It is crucial to address ideological and/or hate-motivated conflicts early on through education, awareness, and intervention activities that promote tolerance, understanding, and respect for diversity. By recognizing the signs of hate-motivated conflict and intervening, potential conflict can be stopped before it escalates into violence.

ReDirect provides targeted interventions to address the psychosocial risk factors that make youth vulnerable to ideological and hate-motivated conflict. Through education, awareness, and case management, ReDirect works with youth to build resiliency by increasing life skills, improving conflict resolution abilities, and connecting them to their community.

The program serves youth aged 12 to 18 who are engaging in ideology or hate-motivated conflict with others (both online and in-person).

ReDirect is a voluntary program and accepts referrals from families, educators, law enforcement agencies, and community organizations.  

ReDirect is a partnership between The City of Calgary and the Calgary Police Service with funding provided by the Calgary Police Youth Foundation.

The program’s specialized outreach team is made up of a police officer and a social worker and support is provided in client homes, schools, and other community locations.

To make a referral to ReDirect, the following eligibility criteria must be met:

• The potential client is a youth aged 12 to 18 who resides in Calgary.
• The potential client is at-risk of, or has been engaging in, ideological and/or hate-motivated conflict.
• The potential client has the cognitive capacity and/or English language skills to participate in a program that includes journalling, mentorship, skills building, and other interactive activities.

Once your referral is accepted, you can expect to hear from the team in 10 to 14 days.
