Whether you’re heading out for a weekend getaway or a cross-country adventure, keep safety top of mind. Keep yourself and your belongings secure on the road by following these tips.

Money and valuables

  • Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Use credit or debit cards instead.
  • Keep records of your credit card numbers in a safe place, along with emergency contact numbers for reporting loss or theft.
  • Don’t display money or valuables openly. Keep items like passports, tickets, and electronics out of sight.
  • Label and lock your luggage. Use your name and business address on tags, and keep your bags locked.
  • Take photos of your luggage to help identify it if lost or stolen.

Personal Safety

  • Be aware of your surroundings. Don’t share your travel plans, routes, or financial details with strangers or online.
  • Avoid stopping for stranded motorists. Instead, call for help from a safe location.
  • If you suspect you're being followed, drive to a well-lit public place like a gas station or restaurant and call the police.

Vehicle Safety

Before You Drive

  • Know your route. Keep a map, GPS or navigation app handy.
  • Check your vehicle. Ensure your car is in good working condition before departure.

While Driving

  • Lock your doors and keep windows rolled up enough to prevent access.
  • Stay alert at stops. Be aware of your surroundings, especially at red lights or rest areas.

If your car breaks down

  • Pull over safely. Stay on the shoulder, away from traffic.
  • Use emergency flashers to increase visibility.
  • Stay inside your locked car. Signal for help and ask passersby to call for assistance.
  • If you must leave the vehicle, keep everyone together.

Parking

  • Park in well-lit, busy areas.
  • Keep valuables out of sight, preferably locked in the trunk.
  • Always lock your car.

Car security
